Russia Launches New Bombardments on Ukraine; Attacks Leave Two Dead

Russian missile attacks struck central and northern Ukraine, killing at least two people and injuring more than twenty others, regional officials announced Wednesday. The assaults followed an air force warning that ballistic missiles were heading toward the capital, Kyiv.

Journalists in Kyiv heard explosions after midnight local time. The capital's military administration reported that drones and ballistic missiles damaged residential buildings and warehouses. In the capital alone, one woman died and at least 12 people were injured. Another person was killed in Bucha, a western district of Kyiv, with regional authorities reporting approximately 21 injuries in the capital's vicinity.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated on Telegram that at least three people were hospitalized, one in critical condition. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly urged allies to supply more U.S.-made Patriot missile interceptors to defend against Russian ballistic missile attacks. The recent strikes come amid an escalation of long-range attacks by both sides. Russia has more than doubled its missile usage in July, according to an AFP analysis. UN human rights monitors have expressed concern over the rising civilian casualties, reaching their highest level since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
