Russia seeks 30,000 more North Korean troops, Ukraine's Zelenskyy claims

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Russia is seeking to enlist an additional 30,000 North Korean troops, with preparations for their deployment allegedly beginning in June. According to Zelenskyy, facilities in Russia's Voronezh region, near the Ukrainian border, are being prepared to house these forces. If realized, this move would significantly escalate the conflict, potentially doubling the number of North Korean personnel involved.

Zelenskyy also indicated that North Korea is preparing to supply Russia with additional ballistic missile launchers. He warned that this poses a threat not only to Ukraine but also to other Asian nations within the missiles' range. The Ukrainian president suggested that Russia is using the conflict to learn from North Korea's combat methods, improve its weaponry, and gain practical experience, which in turn could threaten countries like South Korea and Japan.

While Zelenskyy did not confirm whether North Korea has agreed to the troop request or if Russia intends to deploy these forces in active combat, the alleged troop movements have intensified following a recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. During their meeting in Pyongyang on June 19, the two leaders signed a treaty on a comprehensive strategic partnership, which includes a commitment to provide immediate military assistance if either country is attacked.
