Russia Today Journalist Expelled from Romania After Arrival

Irish journalist Chay Bowes, known for his work with Russia Today, was denied entry into Romania and subsequently expelled from the country. Bowes arrived at Bucharest's Henri Coandă International Airport on May 1, but was stopped during border control checks.

The General Inspectorate of the Border Police confirmed that Bowes was not permitted to enter Romania because he is subject to an entry ban. "Following checks, it was found that the man was banned from entering the national territory, and therefore, border police officers did not allow him entry into Romania," the Border Police stated in a press release. The journalist was informed of the measure and provided with a form detailing the decision and the legal avenues for appeal.

Bowes remained in the transit area of the airport and later purchased a ticket to Turkey, departing a few hours after his arrival. The Border Police explained that the specific reasons behind entry bans for foreign citizens cannot be made public due to privacy laws and are only communicated to the individual concerned. This aligns with Romanian regulations regarding the entry of foreigners.

Chay Bowes is recognized for his pro-Russia stance and critical commentary on Western nations, often shared on social media. This incident marks not the first time Bowes has been prevented from entering Romania. The authorities stated that the implementation of entry bans is based on their own findings or requests from competent institutions, adhering to relevant legal frameworks.
