Russian and Ukrainian Strikes Kill at Least 10

A grim Sunday saw at least 10 people killed in a fresh wave of Russian and Ukrainian strikes, as both nations accused each other of deliberately targeting civilian areas. The intensified attacks underscore the ongoing deadlock in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which Russia launched in 2022.

Kyiv reported that a Russian drone strike hit a supermarket in the northern city of Chernihiv, killing two people, including a 10-year-old child. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as "deeply cynical drone strike on an ordinary supermarket" and "deliberate Russian terror with absolutely no military justification." He also stated that Russia launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv, wounding several people, and that strikes in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv killed one person each, with Moscow targeting a residential building in the latter.

As a result of the strike, two people were killed, including a 10-year-old child.

Conversely, Russian occupational authorities in Gorlivka, located in occupied eastern Ukraine, claimed a Ukrainian drone strike hit a bus stop, killing four people and wounding seven. Moscow also reported another death in the occupied Kherson region. In Russia's border Belgorod region, authorities stated that one person was killed by a Ukrainian drone in the village of Smorodino.

These latest casualties follow a day of heavy fighting in which 20 people were killed on both sides of the front line. The escalating violence occurs as U.S.-led talks aimed at ending the fighting have stalled. Russia currently occupies significant parts of eastern and southern Ukraine and has repeatedly signaled its intent to seize the remainder of eastern Ukraine by force.
