Russian Attacks Kill 4 in Kyiv and Surrounding Region as Air Defenses Fall Short

Russian attacks claimed the lives of four people, including a young child, in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and its surrounding region on Saturday. The strikes occurred as Ukraine continued its campaign of hitting oil facilities within Russia.

In the Brovary district of Kyiv region, a three-year-old grandson and his two grandparents were killed when multiple Russian drones destroyed their home. Three other family members and a neighbor who rushed to help were hospitalized. The attack left the house in ruins and damaged nearby vehicles and outbuildings.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at least one other person died in Kyiv from an attack involving six ballistic missiles targeting civilian infrastructure. Ukraine's air force stated it had downed or intercepted 135 of the 151 drones Russia launched overnight, along with other missiles. Russia maintains its forces target only military facilities, despite widespread civilian casualties.

Kyiv is struggling with a critical shortage of interceptors for its US-made Patriot systems, the only defense capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy has appealed to international partners, particularly the United States, for more ammunition, which has become scarcer due to the war in Iran. He also seeks permission to use Elon Musk's Starlink satellite system to guide strikes inside Russia against missile launchers.

Following the latest assaults, Zelenskyy called for increased sanctions to halt the production of ballistic missiles and requested more anti-ballistic and interceptor missiles. Ukraine's defense ministry reported that its air defenses intercepted nearly 60% of the approximately 9,000 drones and missiles Russia fired last month, downing around 5,300. Meanwhile, in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, five people were injured when debris from a falling drone caused a fire at the Ilsky Oil Refinery. Ukraine's persistent drone and missile strikes on Russian oil facilities have been ongoing for months, contributing to fuel shortages that have embarrassed the Kremlin.
