Russian Drone Breaches Romanian Airspace, Prompting Ro-Alert

Romania's airspace has been violated once again by Russian aggression. In the early hours of April 17, Russian drones targeting Ukraine came dangerously close to our border, forcing the activation of the Ro-Alert system to warn citizens in Tulcea. This is not an isolated incident; it is part of a disturbing pattern of escalating Russian provocations that threaten regional security.

Our air defense systems tracked two aerial targets, one of which penetrated Romanian territory. While the drone was lost over an uninhabited area, the breach is unacceptable. The Ministry of National Defense has condemned these actions, rightly pointing out that they constitute a grave violation of international law. This incident underscores the persistent threat Russia poses to its neighbors and the broader European security architecture.

Air defense systems monitored two targets that evolved in the border area. One of the targets penetrated our country's airspace, radar contact with it being lost 16 km South East of Chilia Veche, over an uninhabited area.

The frequency of these events is alarming. The Ministry has already reported 15 such situations in the first two months of the year, requiring the activation of air policing. This latest incursion, following several others just this week, demands a firm response. Romania, as a frontline NATO state, cannot afford to be complacent. We must continue to bolster our defenses and demand accountability from Moscow for these reckless actions that endanger civilian populations and violate sovereign airspace.
