Russian Ex-Presidential Candidate Nadezhdin Emigrates to Paris

Russian politician Boris Nadezhdin has left his homeland for France, announcing his departure in a video posted on Telegram from Paris. "There is good news. I am alive and free," he stated, promising to share further plans soon.

Nadezhdin, known for his opposition to Russia's war in Ukraine, had previously attempted to run in the 2024 presidential election but was disqualified due to alleged signature irregularities. This summer, he announced his intention to compete in the September parliamentary elections.

However, his political ambitions were thwarted when the Justice Ministry designated him a "foreign agent" in early July, a label that effectively prohibits political activity in Russia. Shortly after, he was arrested and subsequently fined the equivalent of eleven euros for allegedly displaying "extremist symbols."

My opportunities to conduct opposition politics in Russia legally are exhausted.

The conviction stemmed from a video he shared in 2023, which featured opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who died in a penal colony in February 2024. Following the conviction and designation, Nadezhdin stated that his legal avenues for opposition politics in Russia were exhausted. He believes he has been "silenced" and does not want to endanger his supporters.

Nadezhdin had previously attempted to operate within the confines of Russian law regarding freedom of speech. He suggested that he may have received some protection from officials in the Russian presidential administration, which shielded him from harsher prosecution. However, the recent legal actions have made any further political participation impossible.
