Russian Foreign Minister Warns NATO of ‘Potentially Catastrophic Consequences’

Russia has warned NATO that military activity in the Arctic is increasing the risk of an incident that could trigger armed conflict with “potentially catastrophic consequences.”

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an article published by Russia’s Foreign Ministry that Moscow considers NATO activity in the far north a direct security threat. He described the alliance’s military exercises in the region as “aggressive.”

NATO launched its Arctic Sentry mission in February to strengthen its presence in the region. Alliance members have increased their focus on the Arctic amid tensions with Russia and U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to take control of Greenland.

Russia has the Arctic’s largest military presence and infrastructure, including a naval fleet with nuclear-armed submarines. Moscow regards the region as within its sphere of interest and is also developing a shipping route linking it with Asian countries. China has increased its activity in the mineral-rich area in recent years, mainly in partnership with Russia.

Norway, which borders Russia, expanded an Arctic-based military brigade this month. The move followed other efforts by NATO members to strengthen their defenses during Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began in 2022. Moscow has previously rejected accusations that it poses a threat to NATO.
