Russian Lieutenant Colonel Killed in St. Petersburg Car Bombing; Wife Injured

A car explosion in St. Petersburg on Thursday killed a Russian military lieutenant colonel and left his wife seriously injured. The blast occurred around 10 a.m. local time near a supermarket in the Shushary neighborhood.

Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed one fatality and one hospitalization but officially labeled the incident a "vehicle fire." They have opened a criminal investigation. However, the Mash Telegram channel identified the victims as a military serviceman and his wife, with the officer identified by the independent outlet Fontanka as a lieutenant colonel.

Unverified footage circulating on social media showed emergency services at the scene, with debris scattered across the road. This incident adds to a series of targeted attacks against Russian military officials and figures associated with Moscow's war in Ukraine. While Ukrainian sources have claimed responsibility for some attacks, they have denied involvement in others. Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on Thursday's incident.

The explosion follows a similar event on August 13, when a Russian military officer was killed in a bomb attack in Russian-annexed Crimea. News agency Reuters reported that a woman was subsequently arrested, suspected of carrying out the assassination on behalf of Ukrainian special services.
