Russian man drives car into crowd in Caen, France, killing two

A late-night incident in Caen, France, turned tragic when a man drove his car into a group of people at a tram station near the railway station. At least two people died and ten were injured, seven critically. The attack occurred around 10:15 p.m. in the northwestern French city.

Investigators are not currently linking the incident to terrorism. Early reports suggest the driver may have been involved in a physical altercation in a nearby bar before returning to the scene with his car. He then accelerated into people waiting at the tram stop across from the station.

The suspect, a 26-year-old man born in Russia, fled the scene but was later apprehended by police in Ouistreham, approximately 20 kilometers from Caen. He had no prior links to intelligence services and only minor traffic violations on his record. French police have launched a murder and aggravated assault investigation.

All confirmed victims were men between the ages of 17 and 40. Witnesses reported that one of the deceased might be an 18 or 19-year-old Afghan youth, though this has not been officially confirmed. The mayor of Caen praised the swift response of emergency services, and city surveillance cameras aided in locating the suspect's vehicle.
