Russian Strike Near Kyiv Kills 37 in One of the Year's Deadliest Attacks

At least 37 people died following a Russian strike near Kyiv, officials reported Saturday, making it one of the deadliest attacks to hit Ukraine this year. The strike ignited a fire in the Bucha district, west of Kyiv, that spread through homes and damaged at least 50 residential buildings, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the local regional military administration.

This attack occurred as Russian air raids on Kyiv entered their third consecutive day, significantly disrupting civilian life and impacting the capital's economy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation as "terrible negligence" by those responsible for storing explosives near populated areas. He stated that a warehouse in the village of Myla was struck, followed by a detonation.

Zelenskyy noted that Ukrainian law prohibits storing ammunition near civilian homes and announced that criminal proceedings had been opened. He vowed that those who allowed the storage would be held accountable. The care home for the elderly and disabled was damaged, and an evacuation was underway. Regional head Tymur Tkachenko later reported that 34 of the fatalities were residents of the care facility.

Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi referenced a similar July incident in Vyshneve, which involved an ammunition depot and resulted in 22 deaths. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed it struck a warehouse in Myla containing components and launch boosters for long-range drones. They also reported attacks on ports and logistics facilities in the Kyiv region storing parts for cruise missiles.

And all those guilty, without exception, must be severely punished so that such situations do not happen again.
