The tanker was reportedly damaged on March 3rd during a drone strike, after which its 30-member crew evacuated. Since then, it has lost all power and steering capabilities, becoming a derelict hulk navigating treacherous waters between Italy, Malta, and Libya. Two attempts by Libyan authorities to tow the ship have already failed, with towlines snapping, underscoring the difficulty and danger involved in managing this crisis.
