Russian Warship Fires in English Channel on New UK PM's First Day

Britain's new government faced a sensitive maritime incident on its first day, as a Russian warship conducted live-fire exercises in the English Channel. The Russian frigate "Neustrashimy" notified the British Royal Navy patrol vessel HMS Tyne to move to a safe distance before firing its 100mm main gun for approximately 30 minutes, about 74 kilometers off the UK's southern coast.

New British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting, on his first full day in office, criticized the Russian action as "performative and irresponsible." He stated that this incident is just a fraction of the security threats Britain and its allies face daily. The Kremlin, through spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, asserted that all Russian naval exercises strictly adhere to international law and maritime regulations. Peskov also noted that Russia does not expect relations with the UK to improve with the new government, especially given its continued support for Ukraine.

Defense sources in Britain could not recall the last time a Russian warship conducted live-fire exercises so close to the UK mainland. The English Channel is one of the world's busiest commercial shipping lanes, and such exercises typically require advance notification. The Russian announcement on short notice has therefore drawn significant attention from the British side. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Royal Navy monitored the entire exercise and will continue to track the Russian vessel's movements, remaining ready to protect national security.
