Ryan Fox wins British Open with dramatic final-hole birdie

Ryan Fox captured his maiden major title at the British Open, sinking a crucial 3.5-meter birdie putt on the 18th hole at Royal Birkdale. The victory marked a career-defining moment for the New Zealander, who immediately celebrated by calling his father, Grant Fox, a legendary figure in rugby and a 1987 World Cup winner.

Fox endured a challenging final nine holes, entering the final hole tied with American Cameron Young. Young had finished his round earlier, posting a 64, and had to wait hours to see if his score would hold. Fox, however, delivered under immense pressure, hitting a precise approach shot and then making the decisive putt to finish at 10-under par.

Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1, finished in fourth place, unable to defend his title. Sam Burns, who led after 54 holes, faltered in the final round, dropping to a tie for third. Fox's triumph makes him the second New Zealander to win the Open Championship, following Bob Charles in 1963.

The 39-year-old's victory came in his 30th major appearance, having never previously finished in the top ten. His win at Royal Birkdale was a testament to his courage and resilience on a difficult and fast-greened course, solidifying his place in golf history.
