Sønderjyske sign new goalkeeper after disastrous start to season

Sønderjyske have turned to Belgium for help after a dreadful opening to their Superliga campaign. The Haderslev club signed 25-year-old goalkeeper Nick Shinton on Friday on a contract lasting until summer 2029.

The move remained possible after the transfer window closed because Shinton was a free agent. He had earlier been released from his contract with Beerschot, a club in Belgium’s second tier.

Sønderjyske sporting director Casper Daather said Shinton would intensify competition for the starting role. He highlighted the goalkeeper’s experience in Belgium’s second division, his development at Club Brugge and his appearances for Belgium’s youth national teams.

The club’s need is clear from its start to the season. Sønderjyske have collected just one point from six rounds and have scored five goals while conceding 13. Daather also praised Shinton’s strength in the air and described him as a goalkeeper with strong reactions.
