Sa'ar cites importance of Israel-Europe relations before meeting with EU Mediterranean Commissioner

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stressed the critical importance of Israel's relationship with the European Union, but insisted that any "dialogue" must be based on mutual respect and honesty, not unilateral dictates.

We believe in the importance of comprehensive, honest, and open dialogue with the EU.

Sa'ar's remarks came ahead of a meeting with EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica. The minister had recently cut ties with EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas, calling her comparison of Israel to the apartheid regime a "blood libel." He stated he would not resume contact until Kallas retracts her remarks.

But 'dialogue' cannot just be one side dictating its political positions to the other side. Certainly not when it comes to issues at the very heart of our existence.

Turning to the Gaza situation, Sa'ar expressed disappointment with Hamas's perceived delays in advancing a peace plan, linking Gaza's future security to the disarmament of terror groups. He also criticized the Palestinian Authority, accusing it of continuing to pay salaries to terrorists and inciting violence through its media and educational systems.

I have no choice but to sever all contact with Ms. Kallas until she retracts the blood libel she directed at the world’s only Jewish state, which is also the only democracy in the Middle East.

Reaffirming Israel's historical and security claims, Sa'ar declared that no government would relinquish the Jewish people's right to the Land of Israel, including Judea and Samaria, which he described as essential strategic depth for the nation's security.

The condition for a different and better future for Gaza - and Israel’s security - remains the disarmament of Hamas and the other terror organizations there, and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.
