Sabalenka steps onto US Open court wearing jewelry worth more than $400,000

Aryna Sabalenka arrived for her US Open title defense wearing more than 127 carats of gemstones, with the jewelry set valued at over $400,000.

The world No. 1 wore a necklace, bracelet and earrings made by New York jewelry company Material Good. The company designed the set to express New York’s heritage as a multicultural melting pot, using gemstones in several colors.

The necklace alone contains 83.20 carats of stones, including sapphire, tourmaline, garnet, zircon, spinel, chrysoberyl and tanzanite. It is made from 18-carat gold. Together with the matching bracelet and earrings, the full set exceeds 127 carats and represents the most expensive jewelry Sabalenka has worn at a Grand Slam this year.

Sabalenka began a partnership with Material Good earlier this year and has worn different pieces at tournaments in Australia, France and Britain. Because 128 women entered the US Open singles main draw, some interpreted the 127-carat total as a reference to the 127 players standing between Sabalenka and the title. Material Good said that was “a complete coincidence.”

On court, Sabalenka defeated Colombia’s Camila Osorio in the first round. She took the opening set 6-2 and won the second 6-4 to reach the next round.
