Sabotage Suspected at Ironman Hamburg; Police Investigate Attempted Bodily Harm

Hamburg police are investigating a suspected act of sabotage that occurred during the Ironman European Championship. Unidentified individuals allegedly scattered small metal shavings on the race route in the Kirchwerder district on Sunday, causing significant disruption and potential harm to participants.

The incident resulted in tire damage for numerous athletes competing in the triathlon. More critically, at least one 29-year-old triathlete fell after encountering the debris and sustained a bone fracture. The injured athlete was transported to the hospital. Authorities are currently examining whether the damaged tires contributed to the fall.

The State Security Service has taken over the investigation, which includes examining potential charges of attempted dangerous bodily harm and property damage. Police are appealing to the public for information, seeking witnesses who might have noticed any suspicious activities in the Kirchwerder area, particularly during the evening and night preceding the race.
