Sacha Baron Cohen Brings Ali G Back to Cinemas Amid Protest Campaign

Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing Ali G back to the cinema, but the character’s return has already prompted an anti-racist protest campaign.

The British comedian and actor first took the satire character to the big screen in 2002 with “Ali G Indahouse.” His new film, “Ali G: Who Iz I?”, is expected in Austrian cinemas at the end of October.

A newly released trailer shows Ali G mistaking a pregnancy test for a vape. It also suggests that the character and a woman played by British comedian Morgana Robinson are expecting a baby.

The trailer presents Ali G as returning after a long absence. “I was 20 years away and chilling. And in that time the world has gone down the drain. There was Covid, wars and Ed Sheeran,” he says.

The comeback has been accompanied by an anti-racist campaign, which has renewed criticism of the stereotypes associated with the character.
