Sailor's Death on Lake Constance: Motorboat Operator Gets Suspended Sentence

A German sailor died on Lake Constance after a collision with a motorboat, leading to a prison sentence for the motorboat operator. The 26-year-old Austrian defendant received a 12-month sentence, with eight months suspended, from the Feldkirch Regional Court for gross negligence causing death. The court rejected the murder charge, a decision supported by the jury.

The accused admitted to being distracted while steering the motorboat. His defense lawyer stated he was talking with his three passengers and using his mobile phone. The defendant himself confessed to not looking forward at the time of the accident.
