Miaoli County officials are pressing the Ministry of Education to accelerate the approval process for a new campus of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in the county. During a visit to educational facilities in Miaoli, Deputy Magistrate Lai Hsiang-ling formally requested the ministry's swift endorsement of the project.

Education Minister Pan Wen-chung responded with cautious optimism, stating he is "optimistic to see it happen" but emphasized the critical importance of ensuring educational quality. He noted that NYCU already operates eight campuses and urged the university's president to carefully consider the institution's overall capacity and resources before adding a ninth.

The planned Miaoli campus is slated for the Houlong High-Speed Rail Park, on a site designated for Hsin-kang High School. The campus is envisioned as an "Accelerator Industry-Academia Cooperation Center," integrating resources for accelerator research and development, as well as radiation medicine.

Minister Pan acknowledged the potential benefits for Miaoli, particularly in supporting postgraduate programs and the semiconductor industry. However, he reiterated his concern about maintaining academic standards. "Writing checks is easier, but how to ensure quality? NYCU must make a commitment," Pan stated, emphasizing that as long as he serves as Education Minister, he will not approve initiatives that fail to provide high-quality education across all levels. He stressed that university administrators must demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to education, ensuring that qualified faculty are brought to Miaoli and that the future educational quality is guaranteed.
