Sâmbăta de Sus: A Făgăraș Mountains village drawing pilgrims and tourists

Sâmbăta de Sus, a small village nestled at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains, has transformed into a significant hub for both pilgrims and tourists. With a population of just 1,500, the village boasts a rich history, notably its ties to the noble Brâncovenilor family and the revered spiritual leader Arsenie Boca. This historical significance, combined with natural beauty and developed amenities, draws thousands of visitors annually.

The area's main draw is the Sâmbăta Monastery, originally built by Constantin Brâncoveanu. In the mid-20th century, the monastery served as a spiritual center for Arsenie Boca. In recent years, the vicinity of the monastery has seen substantial development, with the establishment of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and recreational facilities, collectively forming the Sâmbăta de Sus Climatic Resort.

"Many pilgrims continue to visit the monastery, while others journey further to the cell of Father Arsenie Boca," shared Mariana Petroiu, a local resident. "Many tourists also start their hikes here on the trails of Valea Sâmbetei or stop at the nearby trout farms and amusement parks."

Another notable attraction is the Brâncoveanu Castle. While the current structure dates to the early 19th century, built on the site of an earlier royal residence, it has a complex history. It served as a retreat for interwar artists, later a pioneer camp, and even a storage facility during the communist era. After falling into disrepair, the castle was renovated about a decade ago by a local investor, though not all planned developments were completed. It now serves as a community focal point, hosting various events.

The accessibility to Sâmbăta de Sus has also improved significantly with the modernization of the nearly ten-kilometer road connecting the town of Victoria to the resort. This road winds through the forests at the base of the Făgăraș Mountains, further enhancing the village's appeal as a destination for spiritual reflection and outdoor recreation.
