Samoa government withdraws recognition and support of national rugby union

The Samoan government has officially withdrawn its recognition and financial support for the national rugby union, Lakapi Samoa, following months of unsuccessful attempts to resolve internal disputes. Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt announced the decision, which entails halting all previously provided financial assistance.

Schmidt stated that ample time was given to Lakapi Samoa to address internal divisions impacting its administration, as well as issues raised by former players and coaches. The deteriorating status of Samoan rugby on the world stage was also a key factor in the government's decision.

Despite the withdrawal of support, the Prime Minister affirmed the government's commitment to the future development of rugby in Samoa. He indicated that the government will identify a new union to partner with to restore professional standards and Samoa's standing in the global rugby arena. Existing development pathways and financial assistance are still in place to support the sport's resurgence.
