Samsung Electronics Develops New Material from Recycled Styrofoam for Home Appliances

Samsung Electronics is pioneering the use of recycled materials in its home appliances, announcing the development of a new composite material derived from waste Styrofoam packaging. This innovative material is now being integrated into the internal components of select air conditioners and air purifiers.

The company revealed that it collects Styrofoam packaging left after delivering appliances like refrigerators and washing machines to customers. This collected waste is then processed into a new plastic composite material. This recycled material has been incorporated into the internal structures of Samsung's "Bespoke AI Wind-Free Combo Gallery" air conditioner and the "Infinite AI Air Purifier," both manufactured in Korea.

In recognition of this sustainable initiative, the global certification agency UL Solutions has awarded both products the "ECV Certification." This certification is granted to products that contain a minimum of 10% recycled material, underscoring Samsung's commitment to environmental responsibility.

This effort is part of Samsung's broader strategy to increase the use of recycled materials across its product lines. Previously, the company applied recycled composite fibers made from waste glass to its all-in-one washer-dryer and used recycled cooking oil to create storage compartments for refrigerators. These initiatives demonstrate Samsung's ongoing dedication to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy within the consumer electronics industry.
