Samsung Electronics Tentative Agreement Vote Sees High Turnout Amidst DX Division Opposition

A tentative agreement on wages and collective bargaining at Samsung Electronics has sparked a ratification vote, with initial participation rates indicating significant engagement from the union members. The Korean Federation of Samsung Electronics Unions (KFEU), the largest union, reported that over 57.4% of its members had cast their votes within just three hours of the polls opening on May 22nd. This high turnout suggests a strong interest in the outcome of the negotiations.

However, the process is not without its internal divisions. While the KFEU, largely composed of semiconductor (DS) division workers, is expected to lean towards approval, a notable segment of employees, particularly from the Device eXperience (DX) division, have voiced strong opposition. These dissenting members are actively campaigning for a rejection of the tentative agreement, citing concerns that the deal inadequately addresses their interests and potentially 'passes over' the DX division.

DX employees started an anti-tentative agreement vote campaign yesterday. We will strive for its rejection in solidarity with other business units within the semiconductor division.

Adding to the complexity, a third union, the Samsung Electronics Donghaeng Union (Donghaeng Union), has seen a surge in membership, with reports of thousands of new members joining in opposition to the tentative agreement. Representatives from both the Donghaeng Union and DX division members within the KFEU have publicly declared their intention to vote against the agreement and are mobilizing efforts to ensure its defeat. The voting period is set to conclude on May 27th, and the outcome remains uncertain as these opposing factions vie for influence.

The KFEU thoroughly passed over the DX division and reached a discriminatory agreement, causing anger among workers. Thousands of workers who were enraged by the executive board's unilateral decision have joined the Donghaeng Union in one day. To prevent the executive board's autocracy, the Donghaeng Union will conduct its own vote.
