Samsung, LG, KT Lead After First Half of KBO Season Amid Record Crowds and Star Performances

The 2026 KBO League has wrapped up its first half with unprecedented success, drawing over 7 million spectators in a record 388 games. This figure marks a significant acceleration compared to previous seasons, breaking the old record by 17 games and being the first time the 7 million mark was surpassed before the 400-game mark.

The league is currently dominated by a fierce three-way competition among the Samsung Lions, LG Twins, and KT Wiz. Samsung finished the first half in the lead, bolstered by a strong lineup featuring Gu Ja-wook, Lewin Diaz, and Choi Hyung-woo, and supported by a solid pitching staff with the league's best bullpen ERA. "The first half was carried by our pitching," said Samsung manager Park Jin-man.

Defending champions LG Twins are showcasing a pragmatic style, achieving strong results despite mid-tier hitting and pitching statistics. Their success is partly attributed to pitcher Son Ju-young, who transitioned to a closer role and secured 19 saves, and outfielder Austin Dean. Dean is a top contender in multiple batting categories, sharing the home run lead with 27 homers and leading in slugging percentage and runs scored.

KT Wiz's strong performance has been significantly boosted by the acquisition of free agent Choi Won-joon, who has become a crucial player. Choi leads the league in batting average (.363) and ranks high in hits and on-base percentage. The return of injured players Ahn Hyun-min and Heo Kyung-min further strengthens the team. Player performances like Kim Do-young's power hitting and Hanwha Eagles' Kang Baek-ho clutch hitting have also captivated fans, contributing to the league's overall excitement and record-breaking attendance.
