Samsung semiconductor union considers performance bonuses for social contribution with company matching

The union representing employees at Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) division, which handles semiconductors, is exploring a novel approach to distribute some of its special performance bonuses: social contribution. This initiative aims to channel a portion of the bonuses towards charitable causes, reflecting a growing awareness of corporate social responsibility.

Central to the proposal is a 1:1 matching system. Under this plan, for every amount an employee voluntarily donates from their performance bonus, Samsung Electronics would contribute an equivalent sum. Choi Seung-ho, the head of Samsung Electronics' Super Enterprise Union, indicated that both the company and public opinion have influenced this consideration. He stated that the union views the social contribution plan positively.

The company has also requested this, and considering public opinion on performance bonuses, we are positively viewing the social contribution plan.

Employees would have the option to donate up to 1% of their special performance bonus. For instance, an employee receiving a significant bonus might choose to donate a portion, with the company matching that amount. Choi estimated that individual contributions could amount to several million won. While the specifics of where these funds will be directed are still under discussion, the union is actively collecting feedback from its members. The timeline for implementation is also not yet fixed, but the union hopes to proceed within the current year.
