Santa Fe eliminates River Plate in dramatic 22-penalty shootout to reach Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals

Independiente Santa Fe secured a spot in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals with a nail-biting 8-7 victory over River Plate in a marathon 22-penalty shootout. The Colombian team triumphed at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires after their match against the Argentine giants ended 1-1 in regular time.

Santa Fe's goalkeeper, Weibmar Asprilla, became the hero by converting the decisive penalty and saving one of River Plate's attempts. His counterpart, Santiago Beltrán, experienced a dramatic shift from savior to vanquished. After blocking three penalties, Beltrán missed his own, sending the ball over the crossbar.

In the 90 minutes of play, River Plate took the lead in the 52nd minute through Sebastián Driussi. However, Uruguayan Franco Fagúndez leveled the score in the 80th minute with a perfectly executed penalty after a handball by Lucas Martínez Quarta.

The first leg in Bogotá had ended in a 0-0 draw. Santa Fe's next challenge will be against Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, who advanced after a 4-1 aggregate win over Olimpia of Paraguay.
