Santos Vega: Reviving a Play About Loneliness and the Search for Love

Santos Vega returns to the stage as a lonely singer searching for love, rather than the persecuted gaucho who appears in many other Argentine stories. The production at Buenos Aires’ Teatro Nacional Cervantes revives a play that has largely been overlooked in research about the legendary figure.

Luis Bayón Herrera wrote the play in 1913, and Pablo Podestá’s company premiered it that same year at the Teatro Nuevo. The text later appeared in La escena, a leading magazine that published plays being staged in Buenos Aires. Bayón Herrera is widely recognized as an important figure from the Golden Age of Argentine cinema, but this work has rarely received comparable attention.

The legend says Santos Vega traveled through the Tuyú region, captivating men and women with his payadas. His arrival resembled the appearance of a ghost that briefly took human form, turning his presence into a celebration for local farm workers. In Bayón Herrera’s version, however, he is a timid man seeking love. His guitar and singing give voice to his sorrows, while some of his reflections touch on daily life in villages threatened by raids or dominated by corrupt judges and police.

The character introduces himself through a verse about the vastness of the pampas, freedom, adventure, suffering, love and singing as the destiny of his life. Oral accounts say Santos Vega died beneath an ombú after losing a payada duel to another singer, Juan sin Ropa. In Bayón Herrera’s play, he instead loses his strength after winning the love of Argentina, a young woman who, like him, suffers from loneliness.

Casablanca’s production remains very faithful to the original text. He serves as general director, with a cast including Federico Llambí, Alejandro Viola, Gimena Riestra, Rosario Albornoz, Pedro Maurizi and Yacaré Manso. Performances run from Thursday through Sunday at 8 p.m. and last two hours.
