Sanusi out for two months

Zaidu Sanusi’s expected two-month absence leaves Porto without a defender who had played every minute of the club’s league campaign before Saturday’s match.

The Nigeria international suffered a right-leg adductor injury during Porto’s 3-0 victory over Académico de Viseu. He came off in the 17th minute after hurting himself while attempting to play the ball, despite receiving treatment. Martim Fernandes replaced him.

Medical tests on Sunday confirmed the injury. Portuguese publication O Jogo reported that Sanusi may not return until after the next international break. Porto had first listed him in its medical report and ordered further tests to establish the extent of the problem.

“Zaidu’s looks like something very serious, and Jan seems to have twisted his knee. We’ll see,” Porto coach Francesco Farioli said after the match.

The injury comes as Sanusi enters the final year of his contract but remains part of Farioli’s plans. It could also rule him out of Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, scheduled to start next month.

Porto maintained a perfect league record despite the setback. Andre Silva, Gabri Veiga and William Gomes scored to secure a fourth consecutive win, leaving Porto top with 12 points from four matches, two points ahead of Sporting CP.
