Sanwo-Olu to Deliver Yoruba Tennis Club Centenary Lecture

The Yoruba Tennis Club will mark its 100th anniversary with a lecture by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a history book launch and the groundbreaking for a centenary legacy project.

The lecture, titled "Built to Last: A Century at the Forefront and the Long Work of Making a City," will take place on September 15 at the club's Greetings Hall in Onikan, Lagos. Organisers say the event will create space for discussion about governance, Lagos's development and the role of institutions in Nigeria's civic life.

The centenary programme will also include the Norman Williams exhibition, which will be open to the public, researchers, historians and cultural enthusiasts. It will display archival photographs, vintage sporting equipment, historic club journals, foundational documents and other memorabilia.

The exhibition will showcase the history, heritage and institutional memory of the club through archival photographs, vintage sporting equipment, historic club journals, foundational documents and other memorabilia.

According to General Secretary Lookman Kotun, the exhibition will trace the club's development from its establishment in 1926 as the Orelodun Tennis Club at 75 Tokunboh Street. It will document how the organisation became one of Nigeria's foremost indigenous social institutions.

Kotun said the Yoruba Tennis Club has served for decades as a centre for dialogue, fellowship and leadership while preserving its traditions and engaging with major developments in the country's history. The centenary theme, "A Century at the Forefront of History and Tradition," reflects the club's intention to honour its past while maintaining its cultural and intellectual relevance.
