Sarah Sjöström back on the throne – wins European Championship gold again

Sarah Sjöström has reclaimed her throne in European swimming, clinching the gold medal in the 50-meter butterfly at the European Championships in Paris. The victory is particularly poignant as it arrives 18 years after her initial European title as a 14-year-old prodigy, and marks a significant comeback after welcoming her son, Adrian, last August.

Sjöström, who had previously stated her goal was to participate in the championships as a starting point rather than aiming for medals, surprised many with her strong performance. Competitions in Stockholm and Rome earlier in the spring had already indicated her resurgence, positioning her as the European leader in both the 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle this year. Her win in the butterfly event solidified her favorite status.

Competing in lane four, the fastest semifinal time, Sjöström touched the wall first in 25.05 seconds. The race was close, with Belgium's Roos Vanotterdijk finishing just seven hundredths of a second behind. The event also saw another Swedish success, with Sara Junevik earning a bronze medal with a time of 25.51 seconds, capping a strong showing for Swedish swimming.
