Saskatchewan Roughriders Captain Jayden Dalke Dies in Car Crash

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are mourning the loss of their captain and linebacker, Jayden Dalke, who died in a car crash Saturday evening. Dalke, 30, was remembered by the Roughriders as a "relentless warrior" whose "determination, toughness and work ethic inspired his teammates." The team expressed their deep care for him and heartbreak over his passing. Dalke joined the University of Alberta Golden Bears in 2019, earning All-Canadian honors for the 2019 season. The Roughriders selected him in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL draft, and he signed with the team in May 2022. He played 17 regular-season games for the Riders last year and participated in the Grey Cup. CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnson stated that Dalke was a "passionate competitor who played with an incredible heart," adding, "The CFL has lost a teammate, a Canadian brother and a friend." The league extended its condolences to Dalke's family, friends, the Saskatchewan Roughriders organization, and all who knew him. A practice scheduled for Sunday was canceled following the news, with the Roughriders set to play the Edmonton Elks on Thursday.
