Saskatoon implements changes at dangerous intersection amid construction woes

The City of Saskatoon is taking action to improve safety at the notoriously dangerous intersection of Idylwyld Drive and 71st Street. The area has seen a surge in collisions, exacerbated by construction on Wanuskewin Road diverting more traffic through the already busy junction.

Recent incidents include a serious crash during morning rush hour where hydraulic clamps were needed to rescue an SUV driver, while the other driver was hospitalized with severe injuries. Commuters, like Jazmine McCracken who travels from Martensville daily, describe the intersection as a source of driver hesitancy, backed-up traffic, hard braking, and merging vehicles at high speeds.

"I do believe that if nothing’s done, more fatalities are going to happen," McCracken stated, prompting her to contact the city about traffic assessments. In response to public safety concerns, the city announced immediate measures, including closing the median at Idylwyld and 71st Street and prohibiting left-hand turns, effective Friday for three months.

A planning study is underway to assess the need for both short-term and long-term improvements to the intersection. Officials hope these changes will mitigate the risks and prevent further accidents.
