Saudi Arabia Appoints Commander for Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition

Saudi Arabia has appointed Rear Adm. Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri to command the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition, a significant move to solidify the alliance's leadership and operational capabilities. The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced the appointment on Thursday, following the coalition's launch on July 30, as part of its ongoing institutional development.

The appointment underscores the commitment of the coalition's founding states to establish a complete command structure. The alliance aims to strengthen maritime security, ensure freedom of navigation, protect strategic sea routes and trade, and safeguard global supply chains in accordance with international law. As commander, Al-Shehri will direct joint maritime defense operations, operational planning, and coordination among member states.

Al-Shehri brings extensive experience to the position, with over 32 years in military leadership and operations. His previous roles include head of planning and force development for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces and director of various naval projects and oversight offices. He holds master's degrees from Complutense University of Madrid and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and has completed advanced military education in Europe.

The coalition continues to grow, with additional countries signing the joint statement and finalizing procedures to join as founding members. A planners' meeting is scheduled for August 12-13 to finalize institutional arrangements and facilitate further accessions, signaling a robust expansion of cooperative maritime security efforts.
