Saudi Arabia hosts key meeting for new multinational maritime defense coalition

Saudi Arabia hosted the third planning meeting of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition (MMDC) in Jeddah, a significant step toward activating the alliance. Representatives from 39 countries gathered, with 15 signing a joint statement and 13 formally acceding to the MMDC charter. This marks the coalition's transition into its institutional and operational phase.

The meeting finalized practical arrangements for activating the coalition's multinational bodies and command. This includes appointing a Saudi commander and agreeing for Pakistan to provide the deputy commander for the first term. The coalition's headquarters and emblem have also been designated. Organizational frameworks and reference manuals are being finalized to launch operations.

The MMDC aims to solidify collective maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, and support international trade. The coalition's activation will accelerate the development of its operational capabilities and readiness to carry out defense missions within its area of responsibility. This new phase shifts focus from building structures to activating them and integrating member states' capabilities.
