Saudi Arabia Leads International Initiative to Establish ‘Maritime Defense Coalition’

Saudi Arabia is spearheading an international effort to create a "Maritime Defense Coalition," a multinational initiative aimed at bolstering security across global sea lanes. The kingdom hosted a significant meeting where chiefs of staff and representatives from 43 nations convened to discuss the framework and objectives of this proposed coalition.

The meeting addressed the growing threats to maritime navigation, including attacks on commercial vessels and energy tankers, which disrupt global supply chains and the international economy. Participants emphasized the critical need for enhanced multilateral defense cooperation to deter these threats and ensure the safety of vital waterways like the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.

Discussions focused on the coalition's foundational elements, such as its organizational structure, command and control systems, and operational procedures. Saudi Arabia has been designated as the founding and leading nation, and its capital will host the coalition's headquarters, reflecting international confidence in its leadership role in maritime security. The participating nations agreed to continue the work of military planners to finalize the coalition's charter and operational frameworks, paving the way for its official launch.
