Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan Sign Mutual Defense Pact

Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have solidified their strategic alliance by signing a trilateral defense pact in the holy city of Mecca. This landmark agreement, dubbed the Joint Defense Agreement of Mecca, establishes a framework for mutual defense, stipulating that an attack against any one of the three nations will be considered an aggression against all.

The pact was signed during a trilateral summit attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The agreement aims to enhance collective deterrence and deepen defense cooperation across all aspects. It builds upon a similar defense agreement signed in September between Pakistan, a nuclear power, and Saudi Arabia, with Turkey now joining this expanded security arrangement.

This development occurs at a critical juncture for the Middle East, marked by escalating tensions. The three allied nations are also involved in mediation efforts for the conflicts in Iran and the Gaza Strip. The pact's signing also comes in the context of significant maritime security challenges, including attacks on energy infrastructure and shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, prompting Saudi Arabia to recently establish a multinational maritime security alliance.
