Saudi-Backed Projects Boost Reconstruction, Services in Yemen's Aden

Local authorities in Aden, Yemen's interim capital, are advancing plans to broaden Saudi-backed development projects aimed at reconstructing war-torn infrastructure and enhancing essential public services. The initiatives encompass critical sectors such as water, education, sports, and road networks. A significant component includes a second phase of repairs for homes damaged during the 2015 Houthi takeover of the city. Aden Governor Abdulrahman Sheikh met with Ahmed Madkhali, director of the local office of the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY), to discuss progress and future collaborations. Their discussions centered on preparations for the second phase of housing rehabilitation and the launch of new development and sports projects. Government sources indicated that both sides reviewed the status of ongoing Saudi-funded projects and explored closer cooperation on strategic schemes designed to improve basic services and expand infrastructure to meet rising demand. Among the projects under consideration are a seawater desalination plant, the rehabilitation of sports club fields, and the renovation of schools across Aden's districts. Final preparations are also underway for the next phase of repairs to 620 war-damaged homes. The rehabilitation of the Bridge Road, a coastal route connecting Khormaksar and al-Mansoura districts, is slated as a priority for upcoming work, pending technical procedures and tendering. Governor Sheikh presented Aden’s investment program, urging a broader partnership with the SDRPY to deliver strategic projects, bolster public services, and strengthen the city's infrastructure. He lauded Saudi Arabia's contributions through the reconstruction program, highlighting its role in Aden's rebuilding efforts. Sheikh also reiterated the call for support to establish an integrated medical city in Aden, viewing it as a strategic priority to provide specialized healthcare and alleviate pressure on existing facilities. Local authorities have also initiated preparations for Yemen's first seawater desalination plant, financed by SDRPY, to address the city's water crisis.
