Saudi delegation leads discussions at Codex Commission session in Geneva

Saudi Arabia's delegation, led by Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) CEO Dr. Hisham Aljadhey, participated in the 49th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in Geneva. The international meeting, which ran from July 6 to 10, convened global leaders and delegates to discuss critical issues in food safety and regulation.

The session brings together Codex leadership, representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as delegates from member and observer states.

The session featured addresses from the heads of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside the Codex Alimentarius Commission Chairperson. Discussions focused on the work of specialized Codex committees, initiatives to build capacity, scientific support for food safety standards, and emerging global challenges.

The meeting opened with addresses by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and Codex Alimentarius Commission Chairperson Dr. Allan Azegele.

Established jointly by the FAO and WHO in 1963, the Codex Alimentarius Commission serves as a vital international body. It comprises 189 member states and observer countries, working to develop harmonized international food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice. These aim to protect consumers' health and ensure fair practices in the food trade.

Delegates are discussing a range of issues related to the work of the Codex specialized committees, capacity-building initiatives, scientific support, emerging global food safety challenges, and the implementation of the Codex Strategic Plan.
