Saxony-Anhalt election: CDU says Sven Schulze will lead difficult coalition talks

Despite the CDU’s heavy losses in Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze is expected to remain at the center of efforts to form the next state government. CDU Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann said Schulze would conduct the difficult talks in Magdeburg.

Asked on ZDF’s “heute journal” whether Schulze could remain in office, Hoppermann rejected an immediate discussion of personal consequences. “I do not think it is right to discuss such consequences directly on an evening like this. On the contrary, stability is now needed in Magdeburg,” she said.

Hoppermann pointed to Schulze’s positions as minister-president and recently re-elected CDU state chairman. “He will now conduct the difficult talks,” she said. She also said the party’s internal bodies, including its presidium and federal executive board, would meet as usual the following day.

A news conference in Berlin is expected afterward with the party chairman, the lead candidate and the minister-president. Hoppermann acknowledged that the result had hit the CDU emotionally, saying party members would first discuss it together.
