Saxony Parliament Committee to Convene on Leipzig Airport Drone Incident

Saxony's state parliament's interior committee is set to hold a special session this Wednesday to address a drone incident at Leipzig Airport. The meeting was requested by the AfD faction and will be conducted in private.

AfD interior policy spokesperson Sebastian Wippel stated that the drone defense system at Leipzig failed, prompting the request for the meeting. He emphasized the need to quickly address all shortcomings in drone defense and determine responsibility. His colleague Carsten Hütter added that the session aims to clarify who is accountable for the failures.

The drone defense in Leipzig did not work.

The incident involved a drone carrying explosives discovered on the southern runway of Leipzig/Halle Airport during the night of August 5th. Security sources indicated the drone was found near a Ukrainian transport aircraft. Federal police specialists successfully defused the explosive device.

According to reports, a second, unidentified flying object collided with a cargo plane that had to perform a go-around due to the runway closure. Upon landing in Hanover, the aircraft sustained minor damage. The state parliament administration announced the meeting date on Monday.
