Scammers shift battlegrounds! Threads 'this type of post' becomes new trap, Meta bans over 7,900

As platforms tighten their grip on fraudulent advertising, scammers are pivoting their operations to new battlegrounds, with Meta issuing a stark warning about emerging threats on the Threads platform in Taiwan. Criminals are now luring unsuspecting users with enticing offers of low-priced agricultural products, fan merchandise, and other cheap goods, exploiting the platform's burgeoning user base.

Meta has taken swift action against this new wave of deception, banning more than 7,900 Threads users since June. This aggressive stance reflects the company's commitment to protecting its users from evolving scamming techniques. The company highlighted that the rapid change in scammer methods necessitates timely information exchange between governments and platforms to effectively counter these threats.

Beyond Threads, scammers are also leveraging advertising companies to disseminate fraudulent content and funnel users to external communication platforms. Meta revealed a case where a Taiwanese advertising firm was found to be running deceptive ads impersonating investment experts, guiding individuals into non-Meta communication groups. Meta's proactive intervention in such cases, including sharing intelligence with Taiwanese authorities, has led to successful joint operations against scamming networks.

In response to these evolving threats, Meta is actively collaborating with Taiwanese government agencies, including the Digital Development Administration and the Criminal Investigation Bureau. This partnership focuses on continuously exchanging information about the latest scamming patterns, aiming to shorten the time it takes to identify and neutralize new fraudulent activities. The company also reported removing over 99,000 fraudulent messages from Facebook groups and over 2,300 Threads accounts.
