Scattered showers expected as heatwave continues with highs up to 36 degrees

South Korea is currently grappling with a significant heatwave, with daytime temperatures soaring as high as 36 degrees Celsius. A heatwave advisory has been issued for the entire Seoul metropolitan area on August 23rd, a day that traditionally marks the end of summer's intense heat, known as 'Chuseo'.

Despite the seasonal marker, the heat is expected to persist into Monday, August 24th. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts daytime highs ranging from 30 to 36 degrees Celsius, considerably higher than the average for this time of year, which typically sees lows of 19-23 degrees and highs of 27-30 degrees. Many regions are under heatwave warnings, with the highest perceived temperatures expected to reach around 33 degrees Celsius, and even up to 35 degrees in some southern parts of Gyeonggi Province and the southern regions.

Scattered showers accompanied by strong winds, thunder, and lightning are anticipated across the country on Monday afternoon. These showers are expected in the southern inland areas of Chungcheong Province, southern North Chungcheong Province, and Jeju Island. The precipitation is forecast to range from 5 to 20 millimeters in most affected areas, with some regions like Gwangju, Jeonnam, and inland areas of Daegu, North Gyeongsang, and western South Gyeongsang potentially receiving up to 30 millimeters. Showers are also expected on the West Sea islands from Monday night to Tuesday morning.

While the rain may offer temporary relief, the high humidity levels could cause temperatures to rise again once the showers cease. The forecast indicates that the heat will continue for the time being, with tropical nights, where temperatures do not drop below 25 degrees Celsius, expected in urban and coastal areas. Meanwhile, air quality is expected to remain at 'good' to 'normal' levels nationwide.
