Scheffler equals course record to lead St Jude Championship

Scottie Scheffler fired a blistering nine-under-par 61, matching the course record, to seize a commanding three-shot lead at the halfway stage of the St Jude Championship in Memphis. The world number one, already at the helm of the FedEx Cup standings, delivered a near-flawless performance at TPC Southwind. Scheffler began his round with an extraordinary streak of five consecutive birdies. He continued to build his advantage, sinking six more birdies throughout the day. Bogeys on the eighth and 12th holes were the only minor setbacks in an otherwise dominant display, marking his fourth career round of 61 or better on the PGA Tour.

"Really just a dream start. Probably one of the best starts I've had on tour, to be honest with you," Scheffler commented after his round. "I couldn't tell you a time where I've been lower early in the round. My swing has felt really good in the past couple weeks, especially playing at home. It was nice to get out there and get things rolling early in the round and was able to keep the momentum going and shoot myself a nice round."

South Korea's Im Sung-jae and Norway's Viktor Hovland share second place, sitting at eight under par. Ludvig Aberg of Sweden is a shot further back at seven under. Among the British contingent, England's Tommy Fleetwood, the reigning FedEx Cup champion, is the highest-ranked player, positioned in a tie for sixth place at six under, alongside American Jordan Spieth.

Other notable players include England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Aaron Rai at three and two under respectively. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, however, faces an uphill battle, currently sitting at four over par. With no cut in the FedEx play-off events, McIlroy will aim for a significant improvement over the weekend. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre has withdrawn from the tournament due to a knee injury, having struggled in the first round.
