Schneemann’s 10th-inning hit lifts Cleveland past Detroit 3-2

Daniel Schneemann delivered Cleveland’s latest walk-off moment, driving Dominican rookie Ángel Genao home from third base with a single in the 10th inning for a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

The Guardians had not led at any point in the four-game series until the final swing. Patrick Bailey opened the 10th with a single against Kyle Finnegan, with a runner automatically placed on second, and Schneemann then drove a 1-0 pitch hard toward right field. The hit sparked another Cleveland celebration and gave the Guardians their third decisive-hit victory of the series.

Cade Smith earned the win after pitching two perfect innings. He struck out all three batters he faced in the 10th despite the automatic runner at second.

Brayan Rocchio tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth with his 13th home run, a drive to right field that carried through a strong wind blowing in at Progressive Field. Cleveland starter Gavin Williams allowed two runs and struck out 11 in six innings, recording his 11th game of the season with at least 10 strikeouts, the most in the major leagues.

The Guardians entered the game tied with Toronto for the final American League wild-card place while pursuing Chicago in the American League Central. Rocchio’s home run came two days after he became the sixth player to hit a grand slam and a decisive home run in the same game.
