Schools move underground as Russian attacks force Ukrainian children into shelters

Sirens, limited ceremonies and classrooms in shelters marked the start of the new school year for many children in Kyiv.

Russian attacks on the capital triggered repeated air-raid alerts, driving schools underground as lessons began. The usual celebrations were reduced or abandoned, and some pupils started the year directly inside bomb shelters.

Schools in the Ukrainian capital are now preparing to move fully toward what has been described as “underground teaching.” Others plan to rely on distance learning online, or combine remote classes with lessons held in shelters.
