Schwarz Group plans massive data center in Germany

The Schwarz Group, a retail giant known for its Lidl and Kaufland chains, is set to make a significant investment in digital infrastructure with plans for a new data center in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The company announced its intention to invest up to 5.6 billion euros in the project.

The proposed data center, slated for a site in the municipality of Dummerstorf near Rostock, is designed for substantial growth. It is expected to reach a capacity of 240 megawatts by 2033 and could potentially be expanded to one gigawatt by 2045. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister-President, Manuela Schwesig.

Schwesig highlighted the regional government's strategic goal to reduce the state's reliance on foreign data center providers. This initiative aligns with the Schwarz Group's broader digital expansion, which includes an ongoing 11 billion euro investment in another data center in Lübbenau, in the Spreewald region. That facility is planned to operate entirely on renewable energy.

As a major IT user with approximately 14,200 stores worldwide, the Schwarz Group's investment underscores the growing demand for data processing and storage capabilities within the retail sector and beyond. The project is expected to bolster the region's technological infrastructure and potentially create new economic opportunities.
