SCO Head Congratulates Kyrgyzstan on UN Security Council Election

Nurlan Ermekbayev, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), extended congratulations to Kyrgyzstan's President Sadyr Japarov and the nation's people following their election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The country is set to serve on the council for the 2027-2028 term.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ermekbayev described the election as a "significant achievement" and a testament to Kyrgyzstan's "high international authority." He recognized the country's consistent contributions to peace, security, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation. Ermekbayev expressed his conviction that Kyrgyzstan's participation in the Security Council would advance principles of mutual respect, equitable dialogue, and collective problem-solving for international issues, aligning with the SCO's objectives.

This marks a historic moment for Kyrgyzstan, as it is the first time the nation has been elected to serve on one of the UN's principal organs. The election took place on June 3 during a UN General Assembly session in New York. Kyrgyzstan garnered strong support, receiving 142 votes from member states.

I am convinced that the participation of the Kyrgyz Republic in the work of the UN Security Council will contribute to the promotion of the principles of mutual respect, equitable dialogue, and the collective search for solutions to pressing international problems, which is consistent with the goals and objectives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Kyrgyzstan's successful bid saw it outperform the Philippines, which was also competing for a non-permanent seat. The Philippines secured 49 votes in the balloting process. The SCO's congratulatory message underscores the international recognition of Kyrgyzstan's growing role in global governance.
