Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar set to become a minister in Burnham's government

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar is poised to step down from his role and transition to a ministerial position within Andy Burnham's new government. Official confirmation of this significant political shift is anticipated within the coming hours.

The move would necessitate Sarwar's departure from the Scottish Parliament, where he has led the party, and his subsequent appointment to the House of Lords. This development follows a period of political turbulence, including Sarwar's public call for Sir Keir Starmer's resignation in February, an event that nearly ended the then-prime minister's tenure.

Sarwar was reportedly present at an event in London last Friday when Andy Burnham assumed leadership of the Labour Party. He is widely expected to be appointed as a business minister. The Scottish Labour party secured only 17 seats in the Scottish Parliament elections held in May, a result that has led to this strategic realignment.

Although Sarwar had previously pledged to remain as the leader for the party in Scotland, his move to Westminster is expected to create a leadership vacancy. Due to new rules implemented last year, politicians cannot simultaneously hold seats in both the Westminster and Scottish Parliaments. His Holyrood seat will not trigger a by-election as he was elected via the regional list system.
